Pop the Champagne!

Let me commence the first of hopefully many posts. I have always been a critic of such blogs, but to correctly convey my experiences the next two years, I thought it necessary. I have included my address for the first three months on the side. I will also be checking my email for a bit more personal connection. Things are awfully crazy right now, so I have no words of reflection or inspiration. Hopefully next time your eyes meet this page, I will have some thrilling story from CAMEROOOOOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Lifeline: Letters and Packages

I would adore any form of snail mail love. For the hopefully the rest of my service the best address is:

Some recommendations:

Most packages sent to Cameroon arrive (sometimes a few months late). Nevertheless DO NOT send things that have important sentimental or monetary value. If sending any food items, put them inside a Ziploc bag. This will reduce chances that bugs or rodents will devour them.

A little birdie told me that writing in religious symbols in red on the envelope is advisable. Now i am not sure what type of religious belief to represent, as I will be in a Muslim area, but have some fun with that!

Both Volunteers and family members should number letters sent so that the receiver can determine whether any letters do not arrive.

If you do send packages, bubble envelopes seem to work better than large boxes. They are less tempting to would-be thieves. The sender should clearly and honestly mark the contents on the outside of the package, but a general description of the contents is sufficient: "clothing and candy" rather than "Nike high top sneakers and 2 lbs. Godiva chocolate."

If you are not sure of what to send, I am looking for Americana mostly, so junk food(candy), movies, magazines, books, photos-reminders of home in general. Letters and updates are a wonderful, beautiful thing.
